April 27, 2022

Family,

On behalf of the Pride at Work National Executive Board, we are delighted to issue this official call to convention. Pride at Work’s quadrennial convention will be held August 18-20, 2022, in Minneapolis, MN at the Millennium Hotel Minneapolis.

We chose our theme this year, Out for Democracy, to highlight how much democratic values underpin both the LGBTQ+ equality movement and the labor movement alike. Like the labor movement, Pride at Work believes in every person’s right to a voice in their workplace and their government. But those core democratic values are under attack from all sides.

Please join us in Minneapolis to help us plan our strategy for how we combat these threats and build a stronger, more inclusive labor movement…

We are excited to announce this year’s Solidarity Awards Gala honorees.

AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond

Fred Redmond made history when he was elected as the first Black man as Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO. Prior to his time at the AFL-CIO, Redmond was the Vice President for Human Affairs at the United Steelworkers. While at the Steelworkers, Redmond founded the LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee to help USW become more attuned to the needs of its LGBTQ+ members. Redmond is also the president of the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas.

NewsGuild-CWA President Jon Schleuss

Jon Schleuss was elected President of the NewsGuild-CWA in December of 2019. Prior to being elected president, Schleuss help organize the union at the Los Angeles Times where he was a data and graphics journalist. [icon name=”gavel” prefix=”fas”] Resolutions

The time is here to submit your resolutions to be considered at convention. The Pride at Work Convention Resolutions Committee will review every proposed resolution that is submitted on time and in the proper format. You must be a member in good standing to submit a resolution. Renew today!

Deadline

Resolutions must be received by August 19, 2022 at 8:30AM. This is to give the committee time to vet proposals and ensure delegates have the time to read and understand resolutions before voting on them at convention.

Format

NEW THIS YEAR. The format for resolutions has changed. We are doing away with the WHEREAS/THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED formatting of the past and have adopted a more narrative form of resolutions. This format is followed by the AFL-CIO and many affiliate unions.

A sample resolution is linked below. The general format is as follows:

  • A descriptive title for the resolution
  • Introductory paragraph(s) explaining the background, purpose, and reasoning behind the resolution
  • Paragraph(s) indicating the action we will take – the resolved section, in other words

[icon name=”file-alt” prefix=”fas”] Sample Resolution

Process

Any delegate to convention may put forth a resolution for consideration. Either the person who submits the resolution or someone who can speak to the resolution during consideration should be in attendance at convention. The Convention Resolutions Committee will review submissions and is empowered to reject, edit, combine, or otherwise modify submissions for grammar, readability, and content. In some cases, similar resolutions may be combined or substituted. In all cases, you will be notified before the start of convention of the status of your submission.

Do not number or date your resolution – we will do that when we compile them. If your resolution is not in the proper format, you will be notified and given the option to correct it as long as the deadline has not passed, otherwise it will be rejected.

How to Submit

Resolutions in the proper format should be submitted by to resolutions@prideatwork.org before midnight on August 16, 2022. You may also submit questions to this email address. After midnight on August 16, 2022, you must provide 150 copies of any resolution you wish to submit for consideration at convention.
